You will develop your skills in British Sign Language to be able to use in a wide range of everyday situations. The course is an ideal next step for those who have completed the Level 1 qualification we offer.
Students will recognise variations in the ways Deaf people communicate.Students will develop their receptive and productive skills to BSL level 2 standard.
This is for students who wish to progress in British Sign Language (BSL) and would like to be able to communicate with those who use BSL. A BSL level 1 Certificate is required. However, if you have some prior knowledge you may be accepted without a Level 1 Certificate.
Notepad and pen for occasional notes. Learners may wish to purchase books, CD-ROM, DVD, many other resources from the Forest Books catalogue (www.forestbooks.com) or www.signature.org.uk. Also, learners may wish to download the Signature Qualification Specification for Level 2 Award in British Sign Language as a guide to what will be taught on the course.
Classes will be taught using demonstrations, activities, PowerPoint and games. There will be group/pair work, activities, individual tasks, and class work. The main aim is to enable conversational skills required for the assessments.
Progress is constantly checked by the tutor through questions and answers, using the correct signs in the correct order, and language structure. Also through conversations, receptivity and question/answers, which are checked for understanding and signing structures.
Learners are expected to practice at home to retain memory of signs and language structure. Learners may work together in their own time if desired using Facetime, WhatsApp, Zoom or Google Meet. They may also wish to attend a local Communication Club which is for both deaf and hearing people who want to develop their signing skills further in an informal setting. Students can practice on online BSL and Deaf community forums.
Learners may wish to progress to Signature BSL Level 3 Certificate.
