Description

After this 10 week course not only will you be better able to help your child with their English homework, but you will feel more confident generally with your own literacy skills whether that be reading, writing or speaking and listening. You will also discuss how to prioritise what you should be helping your child with and how to effectively feedback to support your child to maximise progress. The class is online using the Microsoft Teams platform so you have the convenience of meeting new people and studying from home.

Course content:

  • A 10-week course, but if you feel you have achieved tour aims then you need not commit to the full 10 weeks
  • No qualification – you will have individual SMART targets
  • Initial assessment in class – this information will identify what you already know and where there are gaps in your knowledge and skills to be closed
  • Some whole class teaching where there are common skills needs, but there will be time in class for you to focus on what you need to work on
  • The tutor will agree on individual targets for you to work towards in the first 2/3 weeks on and you will work in class/outside class to close these identified gaps for the remainder of the course
  • An expectation that you will do homework and engage with Moodle in your own time to review learning and to work on identified targets – this will be no more than 2 hours a week
  • he course will look to support you and to make you feel more confident to help your child with their literacy skills and their school homework
  • You can directly progress to FREE Functional Skills in September or GCSE if that’s what you want – we'll help you to join the right group for you. You might also wish to join a different class and there will be the opportunity to meet with the Curriculum Manager for a 1:1 discussion at the end of the course if you need guidance.

Requirements


  • No entry requirement, just a desire to brush up your own skills and, if you have a child attending school, the desire to support your child. if you do not have a child in school please note that the learning will be viewed and contextualised through this lens from time to time.

What do I need to do this course?


Your tutor will supply all materials for this course. You may wish to print these off at home. These resources will be available on our Virtual learning environment, Moodle. You will be inducted into how to use this.

Teaching Methods

    • There will be a mix of the whole group and individual work to you can work on closing identified gaps in your learning
    • you will look at typical pieces of homework and analyse anonymised examples of students' work, discussing approaches to effectively supporting your child and deciding on what areas to focus on first.
    • You will discuss how to give effective, constructive feedback to your child.
    • Your teacher will use a range of real-life newspaper articles and other learning materials successfully used in Adult Learning classes to support your skills development.

    How is your progress checked?

    You will have SMART targets set and these will be the basis for much of your learning, both in class and outside of class. These targets will be reviewed throughout the course. The tutor may use quizzes and other methods to check to learn.

    Extra study or practice required at home.

    You will be set homework and asked to focus on specific targets which have come from your initial assessment and any other work you do in and outside of class. The expectation is a minimum of 2 hours study using Moodle to review classwork and to focus on your targets.


    What can I do after this course?

    Progress to Functional Skills level 1 or 2 or GCSE English in September

    You may wish to consider our other courses at AAL to support you to improve your promotion or employability or retraining prospects. You can arrange 1:1 advice and guidance at the end of the course with our Curriculum manager to talk through your options - this can be face to face (covid-19 permitting) or online via teams for your convenience.
