Description

The qualification gives learners the opportunity to investigate the knowledge and skills needed to use counselling skills and engage in a helping interaction, appropriately. Topics covered: using counselling skills; introduction to counselling skills theories; diversity and ethics in the use of counselling skills; and counselling skills and personal development.

Course content:

  • Exploring the differences between a helping and a counselling relationship.
  • Use of core counselling skills in helping relationships.
  • Boundaries in the counselling relationship.
  • Key elements of the Psychodynamic, Person-Centred and Cognitive-Behavioural theories of counselling.
  • Anti-discriminatory practice in helping relationships.
  • Personal Development.
  • Assessment of own strengths and areas for development.

Requirements

    • Successful completion of a Level 1 award in Interpersonal Skills (or equivalent) and an interview with the course tutor.
    • Interest in developing skills to support others.
    • Useful progression route for those interested in furthering their study or widening their work role.
    • Minimum 19 years of age.

Teaching Methods

  • Tutor input; group practical work; group discussion; individual reflection.


    How is your progress checked?

    A portfolio of evidence will be produced which will include the following:

    • Learning journal (submitted weekly), practical work, essay and audio recording.
    • 85% attendance requirement

    Extra study or practice required at home.

    Additional work will be required between sessions, approximately 2-3 hours weekly.

    • This course would support applications to work in caring roles or could enhance existing roles in this sector.
