Stories, poems, memories: this one day course will introduce you to writing creatively. We’ll use inspiring prompts and exercises to get us writing, learn how to engage our imaginations, explore the craft techniques of beloved and acclaimed published writers, and share what we’ve written in a supportive community of writers.
There will be temporary changes to the teaching of this course due to Covid 19
Your safety is our priority, and in these unprecedented times we need to make some temporary changes until it is safe to welcome you all into class.
So, to begin with, your classes will be taught with a mix of online teaching and some 1:1 tutorial or small group work in a safe, socially distanced environment. Some cases courses may be taught fully online if that works best.
However, nobody needs to come into class until they feel happy to do so, all the materials you need to succeed will be online, and if you choose to stay home, we will make sure you will receive all the support you need via email, phone and through our Virtual Learning Environment.
Topics covered will include creating characters and setting the scene. We’ll look at fiction, poetry and autobiography, and you’ll do writing exercises, discuss authors, and begin to share your own work in an supportive and encouraging environment.
Suitable for students who have no previous writing experience.
As the course will initially commence online you will require:
A pen and notebook, though access to word processing is useful for a writer.
Writing prompts
Craft exercises
Reading and discussing published writers
Sharing and discussing our own writing
Your progress will be regularly assessed and monitored by your tutor, taking into account class work and homework where appropriate. The tutor will provide informal, regular feedback throughout the course.
Regular homework assignments will be set – these are optional and you will still get a lot from the course if your ability to write outside the class is limited.
Students may wish to progress to other Creative Writing courses offered by the college.
