You will develop skills in reading, writing and speaking and listening, along with study skills you need to succeed in your further studies. You will also develop your confidence and employability skills to improve your work prospects . Students who successfully complete this course may progress onto Functional Skills in the Spring term. A good level of spoken English is required. Entry is by college based assessment and learners who are not ready for this programme will be referred to other programmes.

Minimum Functional Skills English at Entry 2 or ESOL Level 1 or by college-based assessment at Entry 2 or above. This programme is suitable for people who have been away from study for some time.
Pens, pencils, A4 lined paper, highlighter pens, English dictionary, small notebook for vocabulary. You should buy a copy of "Functional Skills English Entry Level 3 Study & Test Practice," published by cgpbooks.co.uk. This is available from Amazon or you can order from your book shop. There will be one or two other books to buy if you progress to Functional Skills.
Teaching will include whole class teaching and individual learning. Learners will also complete worksheets and handwritten tasks. Pair work and group work, as well as individual activities, will form part of the class, with a focus on working with others as preparation for employment.

A portfolio of coursework will be completed and learning will also be checked during the class.
Learners will need to read independently, and completion of coursework tasks will be required at home, which may require the use of a computer or smartphone with internet access.
