The methods will be learner centred, often task based on a range of authentic or semi authentic texts relevant to your needs to help you live in the community and access print and online information around you. There will also be a focus on local services, news along with world events. You will explore internet media sources to develop your research skills and thinking on a range of local and international subjects. There will be elements of peer learning and an expectation for high levels of independent learning using links on Moodle and other e-sources.

You are encouraged to download the Moodle app as well as the Quizlet app.

How is your progress checked?

There is ongoing assessment, all homework will be indicated on Moodle which you will have access to before the course begins and for a month after your course finishes. You will do mock exams/ practice tests in class as well as at home.

The final Reading exam will take place at the end of the 10-week course. Check Moodle for the exact date.

Please check Moodle at least twice a week as your homework will be written there, along with a copy of the Lesson Powerpoint and extra resources to stretch and challenge you.

Extra study or practice required at home.

There is an expectation that learners will engage in approximately 40 hours of independent study (4 hours per week) to successfully complete the course. We expect that if you miss a class that you catch up by looking at what work was covered on Moodle. We expect you to look at Moodle many times during the week, engaging in blogs and chat rooms as well as watching videos and engaging with other extension games and activities which will be on Moodle to support your reading skills development.

What can I do after this course?

• Log onto Moodle and complete the activities in the section Preparing For This Course
• Download the Moodle app and the Quizlet app
• Also, print off the example Edexcel reading test and try to answer all the questions
• Print off the topic list and put it in the front of your class file. If you can't access a printer please ask PACA to print it for you.
• Think about any individual targets you might have – are there specific areas of weakness you wish to address?
• Start thinking about how you will organise your class folder and which sections you will have, for example: 1. Exam practice 2. Homework 3. New vocabulary 4. Grammar structures
