Description

Whether you want to find a job or just talk with people around you, our ESOL courses will give you the reading, writing, speaking and listening skills you need. You will develop your confidence and skills at your own speed in lively and friendly classes and the first term will give you the chance to get a recognised qualification in speaking and listening.

Course content:

You will continue to develop both speaking and listening skills along with reading and writing skills. However, the focus will be on achieving the course aims. There will also be a focus on local services, news along with world events, citizenship, discussion of your rights, local services, your local community, including radicalisation of UK citizens within the context of what constitutes citizenship within a democracy.

Requirements

  • You should already possess E1/2 Speaking and Listening ESOL, KET (Key English Test) or PET (Preliminary English Test) depending on the level end test you wish to take. Otherwise, you will take an initial assessment with us, which will show that your starting point is one level below the level of this class.

What do I need to do this course?

A folder with dividers, lined paper, pens and highlighter pens, and a dictionary (this can be an e-dictionary on your phone).

Teaching Methods

  • The methods will be learner centred, often task based and often working in groups. You will talk about a range of issues relevant to your needs to help you live in the community. There will be elements of peer learning and an expectation for high levels of independent learning using links on Moodle and other e-sources.


    How is your progress checked?

    There is ongoing assessment - all assessments will be indicated on Moodle, which you will have access to before the course begins and for a month after your course finishes. Some assessments will happen in class time and these will be indicated on your topic list and Moodle. We will use your Initial Assessment before the class, and Diagnostic Assessment evidence collected in the first 2 weeks, to plan your learning journey and negotiate individual targets. We will record and monitor this in your own ILP (Individual learning Plan).

    Extra study or practice required at home.

    There is an expectation that learners will engage in approximately 40 hours of independent study (4 hours per week) to successfully complete the course. We expect that if you miss a class that you catch up by looking at what work was covered on Moodle. We expect you to look at Moodle many times during the week, watching videos and engaging with other extension games and activities, which will be on Moodle to support your skills development.
