Description

This term will give you the chance to get a recognised qualification in writing.

Course content:

Due to Covid-19, the course will commence online. You will use a Google Meet to see your tutor. part or all of the lesson will be taught face to face through Google meet, and you will access learning materials online through our VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) Moodle, where you will find powerpoint presentations andd other resources and where you will communicate with other students and your teacher by the interactive forum.. You will submit work by email and recieve feedback by email or by phone. You should try to be available during class times, however, in the current circumstances we will be flexible anf you will be able to ocmplete some work remotely.

Learners will continue to develop both speaking and listening skills along with writing skills. However, the focus will be on achieving the above course aims.

Learners will develop a range of writing styles and genres, from semi-formal to formal texts.

They will analyse key features of these text types, and develop language resources to enable them to produce their own similar texts.

Requirements

  • You should already possess Entry3/Level 1 Writing Functional Skills or Entry3/Level1 ESOL Writing qualification. IELTs 4.5 will also be recognised as an appropriate entry qualification. Otherwise you will need to demonstrate your level at an initial assessment session before you begin this course.

What do I need to do this course?

Due to the course commencing via distance learning (until such time as we can return to class) you will require:

  • Internet access
  • A computer with a webcam or a smartphone
  • A peaceful place to participate in the course from
  • An email account

If class-based teaching resumes, when you come to each lesson, you will need to bring a folder with dividers, along with lined paper, pens and highlighter pens. You should also bring a dictionary (this can be an e-dictionary on your phone, for example). However, as you cannot use a dictionary in your final exam, you should only use the dictionary as directed by your tutor, to support your writing while also developing the ability to work independently, without such resources.

Teaching Methods

  • The study methods will be learner-centred, and often task-based. You will analyse a range of authentic or semi-authentic texts relevant to your needs, and practise writing similar texts, in order to help you use written English to further your life goals.

    There will be elements of peer-learning and an expectation of high levels of independent learning, including using links on Moodle and other e-sources.


    How is your progress checked?

    There is ongoing assessment. All assessments will be indicated on Moodle which you will have access to before the course begins and for a month after your course finishes. You will also be given a paper copy of the Topic List, which you can put in your class file to remind you when assessments are handed out and expected back in. Some assessments will happen in class time. These will be indicated on your topic list, which will also be available above week 1 on Moodle.

    Extra study or practice required at home.

    There is an expectation that learners will engage in approximately 40 hours of independent study (4 hours per week) to successfully complete the course. We expect that if you miss a class, you will catch up by looking at what work was covered on Moodle, and completing these tasks before the necxt lesson. We expect you to look at Moodle several times during the week, engaging in activities such as taking part in blogs and chat rooms, watching videos and engaging with other extension games and activities which will be available on Moodle to support your writing skills development.


    What can I do after this course?

    • Log onto Moodle and practise the games and other activities before week 1.
    • Also, print off the example Edexcel writing test to familiarise yourself with the end exam.
    • Print off the topic list and put it in front of your class file.
    • Think about any individual targets you might have – are there specific areas of weakness you wish to address?
    • Start thinking about how you will organise your class folder and which sections you will have, for example:
    1. Exam practice.
    2. Homework.
    3. Assessments.
    4. Materials from class.
    5. New vocabulary.
