Planning a holiday to France? Or interested in the language? Is your significant other a French speaker? This is the perfect opportunity for you to start learning a new language from scratch and explore a bit about French and Francophone culture. In this class for absolute beginners with no previous knowledge of the language, you will learn to read, write, listen and speak in French, with the emphasis being on transactional conversations needed for holidays or social occasions.

Your safety is our priority, and in these unprecedented times we need to make some temporary changes until it is safe to welcome you all into class.
So, to begin with, your classes will be taught with a mix of online teaching and some 1:1 tutorial or small group work in a safe, socially distanced environment. Some cases courses may be taught fully online if that works best.
However, nobody needs to come into class until they feel happy to do so, all the materials you need to succeed will be online, and if you choose to stay home, we will make sure you will receive all the support you need via email, phone and through our Virtual Learning Environment.
In this class for absolute beginners with no previous knowledge of the language, you will learn to read, write, listen and speak in French, with the emphasis being on transactional conversations needed for holidays or social occasions.
o Subject personal pronouns: je, tu, il, elle …
o The present tense of s’appeler, être, avoir, regular -er verbs, prendre, faire
o The negative form : ne … pas
o Disjunctive pronouns : moi, toi, lui, elle …
o The masculine and feminine, singular and plural of nouns and adjectives
o Definite article (le, la, les) and indefinite article (un, une, des)
o Possessive adjectives : mon, ma, mes
o Identify singular and plural, formal and informal forms.
o Prepositions of place
o The different forms of questions: est-ce que and qu’est-ce
This course is for complete beginners or for those who know a few words and phrases and who would like to build on their knowledge. No qualifications needed - just a willingness to learn!

Please note that these books will also be used in subsequent Beginner courses so they should last you for 30 weeks’ worth of lessons.

The emphasis will be on learning through communication, though grammar points will also be taught as
appropriate. Teaching will be done through whole class work, individual work and small group and pair
work. Methods of learning include role play, games, music and interactive activities.
Progress will be checked informally throughout the course, by question and answer sessions during the
class, observation by the tutor, and by games and quizzes. Homework will also be given weekly as a means of assessing progress. There is no test or formal qualification at the end of the course.
You will gain more from the course if you are able to do at the very least one hour of study at home in between the classes!
You will be provided with many additional resources (including online ones) should you wish to make faster progress.
