In your reading, be able to understand, respond to and closely analyse a range of fictional and non-fictional texts taken from19th, 20th and 21st century time period.
To express your ideas in speech by delivering an individual presentation, responding appropriately to questions.
To develop and communicate your ideas through writing in a variety of forms for a range of purposes, taking into account matters of vocabulary, style, organisation and presentation.

Description

You will respond imaginatively to a range of stimulating material. Lively discussion on a range of subjects with the opportunity to improve written, oral and reading skills to use language creatively and effectively

Course content:

The course is assessed by two exams at the end of the course in June 2020, each making up 50% of the overall GCSE mark.

The spoken language element is mandatory but does not count towards the final grade.

You will be assessed on your ability to read, understand and analyse the use of language, form and structure in both unseen fictional and non-fictional texts taken from 19th, 20th and 21st century time period .

You will also be assessed on the quality of your writing in unseen tasks which demand that you write clearly, coherently and accurately in a variety of forms for a range of purposes, taking into account matters of vocabulary, style, organisation and presentation

Areas such as spelling, punctuation and grammar will be dealt with according to the needs of individual students, and will not be the main focus of the course.

Requirements

This course is for people who have a reasonable standard of written and spoken English, and who wish to improve their skills in these areas, as well as gaining a GCSE qualification.

What do I need to do this course?

Pens, pencils etc; a ring binder or folder to keep handouts, notes etc.

Teaching Methods

The lessons will involve small group and whole class discussion on a range of topics, and reading and responding to a variety of written materials. Time will be spent practising for the exams through a range of sample materials. There will be written homework tasks each week.
How is your progress checked?
During the course your progress will be checked through peer, self and teacher's assessment of your practice responses to each exam question. There will also be formal, timed practice assessments and two final mock exams. The individual spoken language assessment will be an endorsement and will be separately reported on certificates.
2 Exams in first week of June 2020
Extra study or practice required at home.
Homework will be set every week which might include practice writing tasks and completion of exam practice reading questions, as well as preparation for the spoken language presentation.
