Course content

In the summer term we will study how to: Go shopping in an alimentary shop and express your taste, describe a shop and compare different kind of shops, talk about traditional food and ask for recipes, talk about working hours and habits, describe the family and pictures.


  • Some basic knowledge of the Italian language is required, i.e. how to introduce yourself (age, nationality, address, telephone numbers) and order at the bar or restaurant. Students also need to know how to conjugate verbs ending in -are and -ere at the simple present tense and how to differentiate masculine and feminine words and their articles.

What do I need to do this course?

The book that will be used in this course is called 'Nuovo Espresso, A 1' Alma Edizioni (student book). It is important to buy the book with the CD included. Moreover students will need to bring their own notebook.

Teaching Methods

  • During the course students will work individually, in pairs and in groups. Each lesson will focus on a specific linguistic area using different learning methods such as: gist/ detailed reading, listening, writing and speaking activities. At the beginning of each lesson there will be a little group discussion when students can express their doubts or opinion about what they have learnt. In order to improve their skills, students will also practise the language with the Videocorso.

    How is your progress checked?

    There will be exercises in each lesson. At the end of each unit, students will complete a test and then discuss the results and any concerns with the tutor. There is no final exam for this course.

    Extra study or practice required at home.

    At the end of each lesson students will have homework to complete. All students are strongly encouraged to create a personal notebook with all the vocabulary, verbs and expressions studied during the course. In addition to this, students can also practise the language by using the ALMATV website, where they can find extra exercises and videos.
